Connecticut Borrowers Can Now Get Up to $20,000 in Student Loan Refunds: Applications Open Friday

Good news for Connecticut residents with student debt: starting this Friday, you can apply for the state’s Student Loan Reimbursement Program and get up to $20,000 over four years toward your loans.

The program, run by the Connecticut Office of Higher Education, was recently expanded to include more people and more types of education.

Lawmakers say it’s not just debt relief , it’s a way to keep skilled workers in Connecticut.

How the Program Works

  • Maximum award: $5,000 per year (up to $20,000 over 4 years)

  • Funding pool: About $8 million total

  • Deadline: Applications accepted until Dec. 2025 or until funds run out

  • First-come, first-served — apply early for the best chance

You might be missing out on benefits! Check what’s available to you here.

Who Can Apply

You must:

  • Have lived in Connecticut for 5+ years

  • Have graduated from a Connecticut college or earned a professional license here

  • Complete 50+ hours of volunteer service

  • Meet additional expanded eligibility rules — including new options for former Stone Academy students who didn’t get refunds or join the teach-out program

How to Apply

  1. Apply through the CT Scholars Portal (opens Friday)

  2. Upload your proof of residency, education credentials, volunteer hours, and student loan statements

  3. Wait for application review; awards are given while funds last

Why This Matters

Student loan debt is keeping many Connecticut residents from buying homes, saving for retirement, and starting families.

This program offers real money back to help ease that burden, but because funds are limited, you should apply as soon as the portal opens.

Important Dates

  • Applications Open: Friday, Aug. 15, 2025

  • Application Deadline: Dec. 2025 (or sooner if funds run out)
